Abstract

The Historic Preservation Division (HPD) has reviewed the information submitted concerning the above referenced 250-acre tract of land, which may be donated to the State University of West Georgia to develop as athletic fields as part of a Northwest Campus Expansion. Our comments are offered to assist state agencies in complying with the provisions of the State Agency Historic Property Stewardship Program of 1998.

Based on the information provided, it appears that the subject property has no buildings or structures (above-ground architectural resources) that are listed or eligible for listing in the Georgia Register of Historic Places. According to the information in your request for file review, much of the tract was surveyed for archaeology in 1981 for the Carrollton sewage treatment expansion area; however, the extreme western portion of the property does not appear to have been systematically surveyed. Two previously recorded sites are located on the eastern border of this area, but much of the approximately 35- acre area does not appear to have been surveyed. Before any future ground-disturbing activity, we would recommend that a qualified archaeologist conduct a Phase I archaeological survey of the portion of the tract not previously surveyed [contained on the Bowdon East, GA quadrangle]. This is due to the topographic setting and undeveloped nature of this area.
