Abstract

Eelbeck was a dynamic community associated with Cook's Mill, a gristmilling complex in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. First settled in 1826, the area which became the Eelbeck community developed throughout the nineteenth century. Established as a rural mill, Eelbeck achieved a complex integrated level of milling technology. When viewed within a framework of milling history and previous research on mills and milling communities and districts, Eelbeck was clearly a classic example of gristmilling evolution. Eelbeck is fondly remembered by its former residents and the remains of mill structures, residences, and household debris provide clues to life at Eelbeck. Absorbed by the Fort Benning Military Reservation in 1941, Eelbeck ceased to exist except in the minds of the people who loved it and through the archaeological remains it harbors. Eelbeck is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and should be preserved as an example of milling evolution in Chattahoochee County, Georgia.
