Abstract

The proposed project consists of the construction of a replacement bridge carrying SR 49 over the Norfolk Southern Railroad (Figure 1). In order to accommodate a proposed new line of the Norfolk Southern Railroad, the proposed bridge location will be permanently offset approximately 130 feet northwest of the existing bridge. The construction of the bridge at this offset location will also require shifting the existing alignment of Chapman Road which is currently located approximately 100 feet northwest of SR 49 (Figure 2).

Since the original archaeological survey (Koch 2014), changes have been made to the project. Further archaeological survey is required when changes are made that extend the project limits beyond the previous survey area. In this instance, an easement was added south of the previous project limit in order to place rip-rap (erosion control stones) at an existing culvert that runs under the railroad tracks (Figures 2 and 3). Two other changes made to the project did not require further survey, as all were within the previously surveyed area. These changes include the waterline relocation due to conflicts with proposed drainage structures and the modification of the railroad ditch on the east side of the tracks.
