Abstract

In August and September 1991, New South Associates conducted a Phase 1 cultural resources survey of the approximately 4.8 mile Lawrenceville -Old Norcross road widening project for Moreland Altobelli Associates. The project will be funded in part by federal monies, and as a result, Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act required a survey to locate any cultural resources to be impacted by the project. A check of the Georgia state site files located one recorded site (9GW59) in the right of way. This site could not be relocated. However, the project did discover seven sites; six historic house sites and one cemetery which may be impacted by the road widening project. Due to the recent date, lack of integrity, or both, at the house sites, none are considered significant resources. Therefore, we do not recommend any further work at these sites. The grave site dates from at least 1852, and while it is just outside the project corridor, it is near a high cut bank which may be affected by construction. If this bank is to be involved in construction, thereby endangering the grave site, we recommend that a ground penetrating radar survey be conducted for unmarked graves, and that the graves be legally removed, as necessary.
