Abstract

New South Associates has completed a Phase I Archaeological Survey of the proposed East Fayetteville Bypass in Fayette County, Georgia, in response to a request from Kennedy Engineering & Associates Group, of Atlanta, Georgia. The corridor for the proposed bypass consists of approximately 2.5 miles of new alignment extending from County Line Road to the intersection of SR 54/East Lanier Avenue and Corinth Road. The work for this survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (36 CFR 800) and was intended to determine the presence of significant archaeological resources in the project’s area of potential effects (APE).

As a result of this study, New South identified two isolated finds and no new archaeological sites. The isolated finds include a black-glazed redware sherd found on the surface in the southwest corner of the Flintwood Farm property and a cut nail fragment recovered from the top 10 centimeters of a shovel test in the southern portion of the APE.

By their definition, isolated finds retain no integrity and have no potential to provide important information beyond that which has already been documented. Neither resource contained diagnostic materials or intact, undisturbed deposits. All isolated finds are recommended as not eligible to the NRHP under any of the four criteria. No further work is recommended.
