The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) proposed replacing the existing Snow Hill Church Road (CR 178) bridge over Ochwalkee Creek in Wheeler County, Georgia (P.I. 008417). New South Associates completed a Phase I Archaeological Survey of the project’s Area of Potential Effect (APE), which encompassed new right-of-way (ROW) for the bridge and roadway approaches. The survey also covered an Extended Survey Corridor (ESC) of 100 feet (30 m) beyond the APE. The work for this survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (36 CFR 800). Following the completion of the fieldwork, the proposed bridge replacement project was canceled, and this report finalizes the archaeological resources investigations completed for it.
The project resulted in the identification of a single precontact archaeological site and a single precontact isolated find. The site, 9WL139, consists of a low-density lithic scatter of indeterminate chronology and function that was recorded in the ESC, but that does not extend into the APE. The site portion in the ESC lacks significant data potential. However, the overall eligibility of the site is unknown. It is recommended that an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) be established for 9WL139. The isolated find is a single Coastal Plain chert flake located in the ESC. This find does not comprise a significant archaeological resource.
