Abstract

On Friday, December 14, 1984, Southeastern Archeological Services personnel made a field trip to the Martin Marietta property in south Forsyth County, Georgia. Martin Marietta has recently leased the property and intends to open a granite quarry. Potential problems arose when local informants stated that a cemetery and possible individual graves were on the 200 acre tract and would be disturbed by mining. Southeastern Archeological Services Inc., was contacted after field searches by local residents and Martin Marietta employees failed to positively locate the graves. Southeastern Archeological Services was represented by Chad Braley, archeologist, and Roy Doyon, historian. The project area is drained by Dick Creek, a tributary of the Chattahoochee River. The terrain is characterized by eroded hills that formerly were farmed for cotton. Presently, the land is in pasture and timber.
