Abstract

The V. S . Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District , is planning to widen a 5 . 6 - mile stretch of the Savannah Harbor shipping channel . Three previous cultural resources investigations had been conducted for the project . An archeological reconnaissance of the impact areas was completed in 1978 (Scurry and Brooks 1978) . An archival literature search for shipwrecks , and a proton magnetometer survey were conducted in 1980 (Garrison and Evans 1980) . The present investigation , conducted in April and May 1982 , included a literature and records search , and a low- water inspection from a small boat . The study purpose was to locate the sources of the 1980 anomalies , identify any exposed wrecks not located by the magnetometer, and re - evaluate the areas potential cultural significance . Twenty - one potential cultural resources were identified as a result of the investigation. None, however, could be identified as the source of any of the anomalies.
