Abstract

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, operates and maintains the Savannah Harbor Navigation Project. In addition, to these normal harbor activities, Savannah District, in a cooperative effort with the Georgia Ports Authority, is deepening portions of the existing harbor channel by 4 feet. In order to insure that both the existing project and deepening project comply with the terms of the National Historic Preservation Act (P.L. 89- 665, as amended) and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's regulations for implementing this act (36 CFR Part 800}, Savannah District has entered into a Programmatic Agreement with the Georgia and South Carolina State Historic Preservation Offices and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. As part of the Programmatic Agreement, Savannah District is preparing data recovery plans for archaeological sites that will be adversely affected by the District's activities.
