Abstract

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for the protection of submerged articles or artifacts of historical or cultural significance that may be damaged or destroyed by maintenance of navigation channels under its jurisdiction. In compliance with this requirement, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile, Alabama District, funded studies to evaluate potential sites of historical significance along sections of the Chattahoochee River scheduled for maintenance dredging. Areas of the river having magnetic anomalies indicating submerged ferrous objects or debris were selected for evaluation to determine the archeological significance of the anomalies. Sixteen sites, containing forty-five individual anomalies, were studied by magnetometer surveys and bathymetry. After the data were evaluated, thirteen anomalies were deemed as potentially historically significant, and were recommended for more extensive sub-surface inspection or limited testing.
