Abstract

Cultural resources survey of Oglethorpe Power Company's proposed 3.39 acre Nancy Hart Substation, in Hart County, Georgia, was conducted by Brockington and Associates, Inc. Goals of the project were the location and evaluation of all cultural resources which might be impacted by the construction, operation, and maintenance of this facility. Archaeological and historical research consisted of examination of relevant archival resources and field survey. Survey methods included systematic 30 meter interval screened shovel testing, nonsystematic surface collection of the entire site area, recording and evaluation of standing structures within the project boundaries, and evaluation of visual impact to standing structures surrounding the project site. No significant (potentially eligible) cultural resources are present within the site boundaries. Both standing structures present at the site (a house and garage/shed) are less than 50 years old and are not considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. No surface or subsurface archaeological resources were encountered within the site boundaries. The proposed substation is not located within the view shed of any architecturally significant structures, therefore construction will have no adverse visual effect. Based on the findings of cultural resources survey, it is recommended that the proposed project be given clearance to proceed.
