Abstract

This project proposes to replace the existing 1948 bridge located along State Route (SR) 81 over the South River (Figure 1). The existing structure consists of two 12-foot opposing travel lanes, with approximate 2-foot grass shoulders and rural side ditches. The new bridge structure would consist of two 12-foot lanes with 8-foot wide shoulders. The current bridge is being considered for replacement due to the age of the structure, the structural integrity of the bridge pertaining to the design vehicle and deterioration of the fatigue prone members in the superstructure. The existing right-of-way (ROW) is approximately 50 feet. ROW acquisition will be required if the new bridge is constructed on new location, however at the time of survey, it is unknown whether ROW acquisition will be required for new bridge construction.
