Phase I Cultural Resources Survey of the Proposed Bradley Point Road Sidewalk Corridor Chatham County, Georgia

Abstract

Between 26 and 30 October, 2015, Brockington and Associates, Inc. (Brockington) conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of the proposed Bradley Point Road Sidewalk project corridor located in southeastern Chatham County, Georgia. Survey investigations were carried out on behalf of RS&H, of Atlanta, Georgia, in partial fulfillment of guidelines established by Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61. Survey tasks were completed in accordance with criteria defined under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966 (as amended), (PL 93-291), and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation revised 36 CFR Part 800 Regulations. The current undertaking included both an archaeological and a historic architectural survey component. During the archaeological survey, a shovel-testing and pedestrian survey was conducted along the entire 1,920-meter (m) (6,300-foot) corridor. The architectural survey included a viewshed analysis of all potentially historic buildings or structures in the vicinity of the proposed corridor. The project corridor begins at the intersection of Bradley Point Road and Fairwind Road on the northwest side of Bradley Point Road within the existing right-of-way (r/w), and continues approximately 1,620 meters (5300 feet) along Bradley Point Road northeastward to the intersection with Johnny Mercer Boulevard. From this intersection, the corridor continues 300 meters (1,000 feet) southeastward along the southwest side of Johnny Mercer Boulevard to just prior to the intersection with Bryan Woods Road, where it crosses Johnny Mercer Boulevard and extends approximately 30 meters (100 feet) into the woods to connect with a recreational trail. The proposed sidewalk will be approximately five feet in width; however, construction and landscaping will likely affect the entire approximate 10-m (30-ft).
