Abstract

In January, 2003, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., conducted an archeological reconnaissance survey of the proposed Chattahoochee Bend State Park. The proposed park incorporates an area of roughly 1178 ha (291 0 ac), primarily in northwestern Coweta County but also extending into extreme northeastern Heard County. The intent of the survey was to provide archeological information to park planning personnel that will assist them in the development of a site-specific master plan. This goal was accomplished through a combination of archival research and field reconnaissance. Because this was a reconnaissance level survey, the primary goal was to ascertain the types of sites that might be expected to occur in the tract and to form some preliminary indications regarding their ubiquity and distribution. Secondarily, the field reconnaissance was aimed at finding as many significant sites (e.g., cemeteries and well preserved prehistoric sites) as possible so that they can be avoided.

This report summarizes the results of a reconnaissance level archeological survey of a proposed state park in Coweta and Heard Counties, Georgia (Figure 1 ). As the name implies, the proposed Chattahoochee Bend State Park is located along a "big bend" in the Chattahoochee River. The 1178 ha (2910 ac) tract includes approximately 8 km (5 mi) of river frontage and extends from the river to as much as 2 km (1.2 mi) straight-line distance into the adjacent uplands.
