Abstract

In August of 2009 Southeastern Archeological Services conducted a Phase I archeological survey of two parcels of land adjoining the west side of Sandy Creek in northern Clarke County, in anticipation of Athens-Clarke County acquiring the two parcels. The Fleeman Tract (Tax Parcell 51 022C) is 2.46 ac and is composed of nearly equal amounts of steep ridge slope and creek floodplain. The Collier tract (Tax Parcel161 006E) is 3.9 ac and is composed entirely of creek floodplain. The Georgia Archaeological Site Files indicated that one previously recorded site, 9CA32 or the Booths Bottom Site, could be within the Collier tract, but most likely not. Maps and old aerial photographs indicate that no historic period structures existed on the properties, although there is a small, older house immediately adjacent to the Collier tract. The two tracts were visually inspected and two shovel tests were placed in each by the author on August 19, 2009. No evidence of archeological material or sites was detected in either tract. Thus, we conclude that neither tract contains archeological sites and that no further investigation is warranted.
