On March 6, 1995, Garrow & Associates undertook a Phase I level investigation of foundational remains discovered on the grounds of the Georgia Military College, located in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia. The Georgia Military College (GMC), established in 1879, occupies the Old Capital complex, which served as the capital of Georgia from 1807 to 1868. The campus contains the original State Capitol building and the Old State House Square grounds, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In March, 1995, excavation for the foundation of a new academic building, to be situated east of the Old State House, also referred to as the Old Capitol, uncovered the remains of an undocumented structure (9BL133). The purposes of the Phase I level investigation conducted by Garrow & Associates were to 1) determine the dimensions of the structure; 2) attempt to establish the age of the remains; 3) discern, if possible, the function of the structure and its relationship to other historically known buildings occupying the Old State House Square; 4) examine the stratigraphic profiles of the excavation area for traces of other previously unrecorded structures or associated cultural features; and 5) make recommendations regarding further actions. As a result of the GMC survey, a total of 4 mid-to late-nineteenth century cultural features were identified. It is recommended that the 9BL133 remains be preserved in place.
