Abstract

Subterraine performed an intensive Phase I archaeological survey on March 20, 2015 of the proposed lease area and access of the Veal telecommunication project located in Bowdon, Georgia (33° 29' 7.8" N, 85° 14' 14.4" W). The study was conducted for Terracon Consultants, Inc., on behalf of Cellco Partnership and its controlled affiliates doing business as Verizon Wireless, in order to locate and identify cultural resources and to assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria.

Review of the Georgia Archaeological Site File, NRHP files, historic structures files, and compliance report files at the Georgia Historic Preservation Division revealed that there are no previously recorded archaeological sites or reports within 3/4-mi of the project area. Because of the absence of archaeological materials within the current proposed project APE for direct effects, it is recommended that the project receive archaeological resource clearance; no further archaeological work is recommended for the project area APE for direct effects.

The archaeological survey area is equal to the area of ground disturbing activity (APE for direct effects), which is a 100-ft by 100-ft (30-m by 30-m) proposed lease area and a 592.44-ft by 30-ft (180.57-m by 9-m) proposed access easement (Appendix A). In addition, a 3/4-mile visual APE was assessed in order to research the indirect effects that the proposed tower may have on archaeological sites listed or eligible for listing in the NRHP. The project is located in southwest Carroll County 5.9 km (3.6 mi) southeast of Bowdon, Georgia and 270m (886 ft.) southwest of the intersection of Old Columbus Road and Dashboard Road (Fig. I). Billy McCarley completed the fieldwork and subsequent data analysis for this project.
