Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Project IMNH0-0285-01(352), PI No. 713300-, the Bouldercrest Road Interchange Improvement Project, consists of the reconstruction of the Interstate 285 (1-285)/Bouldercrest Road Interchange and the addition of collector-distributor (CD) lanes on new location to provide ramps between Interstate 675 (1-675) and Bouldercrest Road in DeKalb County, Georgia. The project would also include improvements to Bouldercrest Road
from approximately 220 feet south of Sugar Creek Golf Drive to approximately 525 feet north of
Continental Way. The project begins at the existing 1-285/1-675 interchange and ends just west of the 1-285 bridge over Sugar Creek. The total project length is approximately 1.9 miles along 1- 285 and approximately .5 mile along Bouldercrest Road.
The proposed Bouldercrest Road bridge over 1-285 is proposed to be approximately 115 feet wide and would have six 12-foot wide travel lanes (two southbound through lanes, two southbound turn lanes, and two northbound through lanes), 5-foot 6-inch sidewalks on both sides, and two 4-foot wide bicycle lanes (one in each direction). The new Bouldercrest Road bridge would be shifted east and stage-constructed to reduce realignment work on Bouldercrest
Road north of Continental Way and south of 1-285.
The addition of C-D lanes was evaluated and selected to improve operations on 1-285 between 1- 675 and Bouldercrest Road. The C-D roadways vary from one to three lanes (16 to 36 feet) with a 12-foot wide shoulder to the right (10 feet paved) and an 8-foot wide shoulder to the left (4 feet paved). Two bridges over the South River with proposed widths of approximately 60 feet are required. A bridge over South River Tributary 10 with a proposed width of approximately 60 feet is also required.
Along Continental Way, a 14-foot center turn lane is proposed to be added resulting in a threelane roadway to improve operations for the heavy truck traffic generated by the truck stop and warehousing/distribution facilities served by this route.
A median opening at Industrial Drive would be provided to allow truck access to and from Bouldercrest Road. A median opening and traffic signal would be provided at Continental Way to allow direct access from the 1-285 Westbound exit ramp across Bouldercrest Road to Continental Way. To maintain safe operating conditions, eastbound traffic on Continental Way will be channelized to tum either north or south on Bouldercrest Road. A median opening at the proposed I-285 Westbound entrance ramp terminal would not be provided. Turning movements were eliminated at this location by modifying the interchange to include a partial cloverleaf
(Parclo).
The Parclo interchange configuration would improve operations at the Bouldercrest Road/
Continental Way intersection and reduce truck impacts on much of the corridor. The driveway to
The Park at Bouldercrest apartment complex is proposed to be relocated to maintain a 300-foot control of access from the I-285 ramp terminals.
