Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the. National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BHS-0776(6), Putnam and Hancock Counties, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project would replace the existing bridge on State Route 16 over the Oconee River at the Putnam County, Hancock County line. The proposed construction would begin approximately 1085 feet west of the existing bridge and end approximately 3000 feet east of the existing bridge for a total project length of approximately 1 mile. The existing right-of-way on SR 16 is 200 feet, an additional 0-65 feet of right-of-way would be required.
