Abstract

During environmental surveys for GDOT Project BRSLB-1320-00(004), PI 231152, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) identified two National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligible archaeological sites, 9JS91 and 9JS92, within the vicinity of the of the County Road (CR) 191 bridge over the Ogeechee River in Jenkins County, Georgia. At the time, archaeological site 9JS91 was located within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) for the project, while 9JS92 was located outside of the CR 191 right-of-way and project limits. As a result, an original Preservation Plan was prepared for 9JS91 in March 2010 and concurred with by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) on March 29, 2010. Since that time, project changes occurred in the vicinity of 9JS92 lengthening the APE and requiring additional survey and delineation of the site. The following document represents an updated Preservation Plan to account for the newly identified portions of 9JS92. The goal of the following preservation plan is to provide guidance, in partnership with the local Jenkins County government, for the continued protection and management of this archaeological resource located on Jenkins County property. Due to safety concerns, the bridge was closed to traffic in March 2011 pending its replacement. Concrete barriers and road closed signs have been installed to prevent traffic from accessing the bridge. Replacement of the bridge is scheduled to begin in March 2014.
