In April of 2002, Prentice Thomas and Associates, Inc. (PTA) was awarded Contract No. C5000030247 for large-scale archaeological survey at Fort Stewart Military Reservation and Hunter Army Airfield in southeastern Georgia. These are non-contiguous parcels, with Fort Stewart located near Hinesville, Georgia, and Hunter Army Airfield near Savannah. The contract is administered by the National Park Service, Southeast Archeological Center, with funds provided by Fort Stewart, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Branch. This report documents the procedures and findings from Delivery Order 10, which called for the survey of 5830 acres in 14 Natural Resource Management Units. Procedures for survey varied, depending upon whether the area was considered high probability or low probability, and whether it was restricted to walkover or could be subjected to subsurface testing. The survey produced a total of 110 sites and 67 isolated finds that represented a broad spectrum of prehistoric and historic components. The former range from Early Archaic to Mississippian. Among the latter components were diagnostics of mid-eighteenth to early twentieth century domestic and industrial activities. Of the total sites, 97 were evaluated unequivocally as ineligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The data from survey were insufficient to make an unequivocal evaluation at 13 of the sites; formal testing and evaluation is recommended. None of the isolated finds are eligible.
