Abstract

In 2002, Prentice Thomas and Associates, Inc. was awarded Contract No. C5890020159 to provide test and evaluation services to support the cultural resources management program at Fort Stewart Military Reservation and Hunter Army Airfield. The contract is administered by the National Park Service, Southeast Archeological Center, with funds provided by Fort Stewart, Directorate of Public Work, Environmental Branch. The second delivery order was issued in September of2003, calling for the testing of 10 sites in Bryan and Liberty counties, Georgia. The sites are 9BN284, 9BN286, 9BN289, 9BN290, 9BN308, 9BN32l, 9BN326, 9BN475, 9LI406, and 9LI1350. The sites were tested through a combination of field approaches, which included reconnaissance, metal detection, surface collection, shovel testing, and test pit excavation. Historic research was undertaken at those sites for which this effort was tasked. The sites span a broad period in prehistory, from the Middle Archaic through the Mississippian era. Among the historic components, there was a homestead dating from 1776 to 1820 or 1830, a late nineteenth to early twentieth century homestead, and a bridge built sometime after 1900. Two sites have been evaluated as eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. 9BN284 contains a Middle Archaic Morrow Mountain II component and 9BN475 has a homestead dating from the Revolutionary War Period up to the early Antebellum Period. The remaining sites are evaluated as ineligible, largely due to disturbance and/or insignificant findings.
