Abstract

In the summer of 2014 Georgia Transmission Corporation (GTC) contracted with Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS) to conduct a Phase I archeological survey of the proposed Ozell- Pavo and Ozell- Eason's Crossing 115 kV transmission lines. Combined, the two transmission lines are approximately 21 km (13 mi) long. The proposed right-of-way is 30m (100 ft) wide for the cross-country portions of both lines, and 15 m (50 ft) wide for portions that are located adjacent to roads. Along those sections the proposed center line is approximately 5 ft from the edge of the road right-of-way. Also surveyed was the proposed 2.75 ac Ozell substation tract.     Fourteen archeological sites and three isolated artifacts (occurrences) were recorded by the survey. Thirteen of the sites are scatters of late nineteenth to twentieth century artifacts, most of which are associated with former house locations. The remaining site is a low density scatter of chert flakes dating to some unknown time in prehistory. Due to poor integrity and low research potential, none of the sites are considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, and no further consideration should be necessary prior to transmission line construction.
