Abstract

In July of 2013, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. conducted an intensive, Phase I archeological survey of a 185.7‑ac tract located about 1 mile southeast of Hazlehurst in east central Jeff Davis County. The tract is being developed for an industrial facility and because wetlands may be affected a Section 404 permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers is required, which requires compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. Development plans had been formulated to avoid almost all of the wetlands, and grading of the better drained land, where the facility will be located, had begun at the time of our survey. The surface inspection of small amounts of exposed ground surface and the excavation of 154 shovel tests led to the discovery and delineation of two archeological sites, one a twentieth century house site/farmstead and the other a cluster of three farm outbuildings associated with a farmstead outside of the project tract. We recommend that both sites are not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and that the proposed undertaking will have no adverse effects on significant archeological resources.
