Abstract

The proposed project would construct and improve the pedestrian facilities along South Hill Street between Main Street and Buford Highway (Figure 1).The project proposes to construct new sidewalks using concrete or brick, raised curbs (Americans with Disabilities Act accessible at intersections), pedestrian crossings, lighting, and plant street trees. The proposed pedestrian facilities would provide a connection between the new City Hall on Buford Highway, existing historic neighborhoods, and Buford's historic Main Street corridor. It would also connect to the Gwinnett County Transit #50 bus, which runs along both Main Street (northern terminus) and at Buford Highway (southern terminus). With the exception of the area from School Street to Buford Highway, the proposed work would be completed within the existing Hill Street right-of-way. At the existing intersection of School Street and Hill Street it is proposed to shift School Street approximately SO-feet to the south in order to create a four way intersection with Peevy Street. From this realigned intersection to Buford Highway the proposed project would also include a 10-foot wide raised median, which would require shifting the southbound lane of Hill Street to the west. This shift would require an approximately 1S-foot wide strip of additional right-of-way between School Street and Buford Highway along the western side of Hill Street.
