Abstract

Environmental Corporation of America (ECA) has completed an Archaeological Assessment for the federal undertaking at the project area. The project area includes a 5,278 square-foot (~490 square-meter) proposed lease area containing a fenced compound and a proposed approximate 458-foot long by 30-foot wide (~140-meter by 9-meter) access/utility easement. The facility would include a 165-foot (overall height) monopole telecommunications structure and associated ground-level support equipment. The project area is located at 5406 Augusta Road, Garden City, Chatham County, Georgia.

This archaeological assessment was conducted in order to ascertain whether the proposed undertaking, on the project site, might directly or indirectly affect cultural resources, if any such resources exist. Through our review of available cultural records and databases, eight previously recorded archaeological sites (9CH792, 9CH793, 9CH877, 9CH1096, 9CH1097, 9CH1099, 9CH1100, and 9CH1272) and 19 archaeological survey reports (2067, 2069, 2072, 2880, 3024, 3212, 3809, 3976, 4273, 4795, 5136, 5150, 5189, 5595, 5605, 5933, 6802, 7286, and 7823) were identified within a 1-mile background search radius. None of the aforementioned sites or surveys are located within the APE for direct effects for the proposed undertaking. During the course of the field survey portion of this archaeological assessment, no archaeological cultural resources were encountered.

ECA believes that the proposed undertaking would have no effect on any historic or prehistoric archaeological resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Based on our findings related to archaeological resources, we recommend no further consultation under Section 106 Review of the National Historic Preservation Act for this proposed undertaking.
