Abstract

The proposed project is located in Lumpkin County at the intersection of State Route (SR) 52 and SR 115/Copper Mines Road. The project consists of intersection reconstruction into a single-lane roundabout. The purpose of the project is to improve operational efficiency and safety. The existing roadways all have single travel lanes in each direction through the intersection. The intersection is stop-controlled for all approaches with left-turn lanes on the southern and northern legs. Additionally, right-turn bypass lanes are present in the intersection's southeast and northeast quadrants. There are no pedestrian facilities in the vicinity of the intersection and all roadways have rural shoulders. The existing speed limit along SR 52 and SR 115 is 55 miles per hour (mph). The speed limit along Copper Mines Road is currently 40 mph. The proposed roundabout would consist of a single lane with curb and gutter. The speed through the roundabout would be 20 mph. The proposed ROW width would range from 100 to 160 feet. The construction of the roundabout would help negate the existing skew of the intersection. Additionally, a right-turn bypass would be constructed along SR 52 westbound for traffic turning north onto SR 52/115. The existing ROW width ranges from 80 to 100 feet. The proposed ROW width will range from 1 00 to 160 feet. The survey limits extend approximately 2,100 feet along SR 52/Copper Mines Road and approximately 2,150 feet along SR 52/115.
