Abstract

Historic Resource CO-WC-82 is located south of Luther Ward Road in West Cobb County (Figure 1). The resource was previously recorded during a survey of West Cobb County conducted by Brockington and Associates in 1997 (Jordan 1997). A structure form was compiled based on that survey (Appendix A). The resource, recognized as a Gabled Ell Cottage with two outbuildings, was recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The resource was revisited during the MACTEC survey of the West Cobb High School project area (Perry 2004; Perry and Oakley 2004). At that time, evidence was given to indicate that the house and outbuildings (a third barn was added) were not eligible for the NRHP under Criterion C (Architecture) due to significant structural alterations. In addition, the post 1960 construction of a series of chicken houses and a dwelling within the area historically used for cultivation further compromised the historic integrity of the property. However, based on the potential for sealed archeological-remains under the house, the archeological deposits (Site 9C0658) were recommended potentially eligible for the NRHP under Criterion D.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) review of the MACTEC reports and consultation with the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office (GASHPO) provided the following recommendations (Crampton 2004). The USACE and GASHPO consider site CO-WC-82/9C0658 eligible for inclusion in the NRHP on the basis of "its relative spatial intactness and retention of landscaping/setting qualities, and the extant nature and relationship of the properties to one another and their setting, despite adverse affects caused by the salvaging of architectural elements from the main (historic) residence." Limited Phase III data recovery was recommended for the archeological deposits in the house area, and documentation of the property and its setting was recommended for the structural resources to mitigate the adverse effects of the West Cobb High School project.

During the period of June 28 through July 1, 2004, R.S. Webb & Associates conducted written and photographic documentation of Historic Resource CO-WC-82 in accordance with Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) Level III standards. Both large and medium format photographs were taken of the exteriors and interiors of the house and three associated barns (Barns A, B and C). The building footprints and floor plans of each structure were measured and drawn. Local residents were interviewed for the history of the property.
