Abstract

The Oconee Ranger District (Oconee RD) of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests has proposed to conduct prescribed burning in Compartment 138 in Jasper County. The area of potential effect (APE) for the present project consists of those areas for which ground-disturbing activities associated with the prescribed burn could potentially occur, in particular the location of mechanically constructed fire line. Inadvertently, the proposed new fire line in Compartment 138 was constructed prior to a survey by an archaeologist. An intensive survey of the fire line recorded three prehistoric sites (9JA551, 9JA552, 9JA554) and one site with both historic and prehistoric components (9JA553). None of these sites are considered to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It is the opinion of the Forest that these sites were not eligible prior to the construction of the fire line and that the undertaking did not have an adverse effect on sites eligible for the NRHP. Steps have been taken that will ensure that such errors do not occur again in the future.
