Abstract

New South Associates, Inc. conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey for a portion of SR 39 between CR 99 and CR 71 in Seminole County, Georgia, to determine whether any archaeological resources were present in the project's Area of Potential Effect (APE). Wilbur Smith Associates, who is responsible for providing an assessment for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), subcontracted New South Associates to perform the archaeological survey. Fieldwork was conducted between June 1 to 3, 2009.

The corridor is roughly 0.5 mile (0.8 km) in length, with an existing right-of-way of 100 feet (30 m). An expanded 120 to 170-foot (37 to 52-meter) right-of-way was investigated, as well as "an additional 1 00-foot width beyond each side of the identified APE" as required by the GDOT guidelines presented in the April 2008 revised GDOT Environmental Procedures Manual. Two transects on either side of the road were surveyed to accommodate both the required and additional rights-of-way.

The Phase I Archaeological Survey revealed one unknown historic/unknown prehistoric archaeological site (9SE141); though the site's overall National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility is unknown, the portion of the site located within the project's APE does not contribute to its eligibility. Background research indicated two previously recorded sites (9SE112 and 9SE132) within a one-mile radius of the SR 39 project area. Neither of the sites is eligible for listing on the NRHP. The improvements to SR 39 would not result in any effects on NRHP-eligible archaeological resources; no additional work is recommended.
