Abstract

A cultural resources survey of 113.58 acres was conducted near Rincon, Effingham County, Georgia, during March and April 1986. The survey covered the proposed location of a 201 facility for the town of Rincon. This survey encountered three sites. One of these was a wooded area dominated by the collection of pine gum for naval stores production. The second site was a medium focus and visibility historic occupation possibly related to turpentine or liquor distillation some time prior to World War II. Two alternative recommendations were made regarding this site which possibly has the potential for inclusion on the National Register. First, the site should be tested more extensively to determine eligibility to determine whether in situ preservation should be undertaken. A third site was identified adjacent to the possible still containing Refuge Aboriginal pottery fragments and lithic debris. The area was simply a scatter of material and was not deemed eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
