Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation plans to improve West Water and West Broughton  streets in Bainbridge, Georgia from the town square west to Bruton Street, which parallels the Flint River.  Plans include installing new curbing, sidewalks, parallel parking areas, pedestrian lights, and landscaping.  The current archaeological survey was conducted in support of the streetscape enhancement project at the request of the Historic Preservation Division for York & Associates Engineering and the Georgia Department of Transportation.  The survey focused on a small section of West Water street where plans include the installation of a sidewalk with associated curb and gutter, a new pedestrian street light, and a new tree on the north side of the road.  The south side will remain untouched due to the existing slope and limited right-of-way and structures.
