Abstract

The sudden proliferation of Cobb Indian sites caused the staff members to research past archaeological work in Cobb to form some idea of its extent and priority in terms of scientific importance and value.

The first scientific research by qualified archaeologists was undertaken in 1938 to 1940 as a co-operative WPA-University of Georgia project. This work was directed by Dr. Robert Wauchope. At that time, eight sites had been catalogued, none were excavated. The Second World War delayed publication of the research and "Archaeological Survey of Northern Georgia" was not brought out until 1966, when it appeared as MEMOIR No. 21 for the Society for American Archaeology. By 1966, all but one of these sites had been destroyed by construction of one type or another.
