Abstract

Georgia Power Company filed an application for a new license for the existing 168-megawatt North Georgia Hydroelectric Project located on the Tallulah, Tugalo, and Chattooga Rivers in northeast Georgia and northwest South Carolina.

A major issue is how potential flows through Tallulah Gorge affect domestic water use, fisheries resources, sensitive plant species, aesthetic resources, upstream lake levels, public access, the local economy, air quality, and hydroelectric generation. Equally important is the potential effect increased public use could have on two unique environments: Tallulah Gorge and Tugalo Lake.

The staff’s recommendation is to relicense the project as proposed, with additional measures to protect and enhance environmental resources, including additional periodic releases of water through Tallulah Gorge for aesthetic and local economy enhancement and additional measures to protect Tallulah Gorge and Tugalo Lake environments.
