Abstract

The purpose of this project was to locate all cultural resources potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places and to provide sufficient historical and archaeological research by which management decisions concerning the cultural resources could be made in an intelligent and efficient manner. The Cascade Springs Nature Preserve project area was first used in the 1820s period as the location of the Old Sandtown Road. Since that time its use has reflected the general growth and change in the Atlanta area from that time until the present.

The cultural resources survey of the Cascade Springs Nature Preserve was conducted in the Fall-Winter of 198611987. This survey located 23 sites or parts of sites. These sites were compared to the National Register Criteria for significance, and thirteen sites were determined to be potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. All of these sites were recommended for preservation in place for compliance purposes. All but one of the remaining sites were also recommended for preservation although these recommendations are not binding for compliance purposes. As a result of these conclusions, it has been recommended that the entire project area be nominated to the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district.
