Abstract

Attached are the sketch maps, reports and letters of research carried out during June on Petitions for Rezoning. Each of these areas was found to contain some surface evidence indicating a prehistoric aboriginal occupation. Most of these sites are considered to belong to the Archaic Period (8000-2000 B.C.), that is pre-pottery and having only worked stone as artifacts. The Survey crew is now undertaking subsoil tests in several of these sites to determine the extent of occupation and if any site will yield stratigraphic data. Most Archaic sites in the Georgia Piedmont are identified as surface sites only, having eroded out onto hill-top terrain. In such situations, no organic remains are preserved that might inform us of absolute dates for occupation, habitation data such as primitive architecture, food remains, etc. A series of written reports will be compiled as soon as the subsoil investigations are completed.
