Abstract

MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc. (MACTEC) was contracted by the Gwinnett County Department of Public Utilities to provide a Phase I Cultural Resources Assessment of the proposed Patterson/Marathon Force Main in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The objective of the assessment was to identify potential cultural resources within the project area. This report has been prepared to describe the findings of a literature and document review, along with field reconnaissance conducted from May 7-9, 2006.

As part of this cultural resources assessment, a review of the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Georgia Archaeological Site File was conducted. Field survey methods consisted of pedestrian and vehicle reconnaissance, surface observation, and the excavation of shovel tests in undisturbed areas considered conducive to human habitation (i.e. Jess than a slope of 10 percent and/or not frequently flooded).

While the majority of the project corridor has been highly impacted through road and previous utility construction, or is located in exceedingly steep terrain or within the boundary of delineated wetlands, two historic period archaeological sites were identified within the proposed project boundaries as a result of this cultural resources assessment. Both have been highly impacted and are recommended as ineligible for the national register of historic places. Based on this information a Finding of No Historic Properties Affected is recommended.
