Abstract

On April 19, 1988 Dan Simpkins of the Office of the state Archaeologist conducted a Phase I survey of a proposed waterfowl impoundment area at the Bishop F. Grant Memorial Forest of the University of Georgia (which is also the Central Georgia Branch station Wildlife Management Area), at the request of the Game and Fish Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. According to the memorandum requesting the archaeological survey, the project acreage, 11 within fences would be controlled by the UGA Extension service-Experiment Station System and the actual project site is controlled by the School of Forestry, UGA. '' The project area includes about 65 acres of floodplain and terraces along one m1le of an unnamed tributary of Big Indian Creek in Putnam County. Both banks of the creek are involved in the project which will consist of the construction of a dam and several control structures along the creek. The majority of fill for the main dam will come from clay soils of the upland toe slopes in the north eastern portion of the project area.
