Abstract

The portions of South and East Atlanta Tollways which extend through the geologic area at the southeast corner of the City of Atlanta known as Soapstone Ridge. Information gathered during preparation of the Environmental Impact Analysis (EIA) and the Civil Engineering Reports in addition to more recently gathered data is presented in response to specific issues raised concerning the archaeological significance of the area.

The Atlanta Urban Area Tollway system is (1) the product of two decades of regional planning; (2) an integral component of all future and master land-use plans for the greater Atlanta area; and (3) an important priority of the comprehensive Atlanta Area Transportation Study. Both in research and planning, recognition has been given to the value of geology and archaeology as well as to preserving the ecology of the area. In fact, the five Tollway projects are designed to conserve the environment while serving the transportation needs of this progressive, rapidly expanding metropolitan community.
