Abstract

The proposed project would widen and realign Shiloh Valley Drive/Greers Chapel Drive, and then extend the widened road across I-75 approximately 1,280 feet to a widened Roberts Court to form a continuous road approximately 0.3 mile south of Ernest Barrett Parkway in Cobb County, Georgia. The proposed extension (called the South Barrett Parkway Reliever) would have four 11-foot lanes (two in each direction), a variable 6- to 20-foot raised median, and 4-foot bike lanes, 5-foot sidewalks, and curb and gutter on both sides of the road. The proposed extension would also include a new, approximately 600-foot long bridge over I-75; however, no new interstate access would be provided at the new overpass. The bridge typical section would consist of four 11-foot lanes (two in each direction), an 8-foot raised median, and 4-foot bike lanes and 8-foot sidewalks on each side of the road.

Roberts Court would be widened to a four-lane roadway (two lanes in each direction) with a raised median, curb and gutter, 5-foot sidewalks, and 4-foot bike lanes north to its intersection with Ernest Barrett Parkway. At the Roberts Court/Barrett Parkway/George Busbee Parkway intersection, Roberts Court would be partially realigned to improve intersection geometry and speed design. The proposed project would change the Roberts Court approach to this intersection from the current configuration of one left-turn lane, one shared left-turn/through lane, and one shared right-turn/through lane to two dedicated left-turn lanes, one dedicated through lane, and one dedicated right-turn lane. In addition, westbound Barrett Parkway would be reconfigured at this intersection to lengthen the existing left-turn lane approximately 100 feet and add a second, approximately 330-foot, dedicated left-turn lane onto Roberts Court. This work would be completed largely by restriping the existing roadway and conducting minor reconstruction of the raised median on Barrett Parkway in this area.

An intersection reconstruction would realign existing Shiloh Valley Drive to tie into Greers Chapel Drive and this realigned intersection would be signalized. This would allow the proposed new roadway to provide a more continuous alignment over I-75 and to separate the Shiloh Valley neighborhood from the main through route. In addition, due to geometric and ROW constraints, the project would construct a one- to two-lane roundabout at the new roadway’s connection to existing Roberts Court.

The total project length is approximately 0.9 mile. The proposed Barrett Parkway Reliever would be constructed by utilizing as much of the existing ROW associated with Shiloh Valley Way, Greers Chapel Drive, and Roberts Court as possible. The proposed ROW along the South Barrett Parkway Reliever would vary from approximately 110 to 200 feet.
