Abstract

The project would grade separate the existing at-grade intersection of State Route (SR) 316 / US 29 with SR 11 in Barrow County, Georgia. The proposed grade separation would include full interchange access from SR 316 / US 29 in both directions to SR 11 in both directions and vice-versa. The proposed interchange would not preclude future widening of SR 316 / US 29. Project CSNHS-0008-00(430) would construct a tight-urban, diamond interchange (ramp heads spaced 350 feet apart) at the existing at-grade intersection of SR 316 / US 29 with SR 11, with SR 11 spanning over SR 316 / US 29 on a bridge structure. SR 11 is proposed to be widened with rural shoulders to provide for left turn auxiliary lanes on the proposed bridge at the entrance ramps onto SR 316 / US 29 / SR 11 intersection and proceed northward to MP 3.43; a total distance of 0.63 miles. SR 11 would taper back to a two-lane rural roadway at the northern terminus of the project. The proposed right of way (ROW) for SR 11 is varies from 100-150 feet. The typical section for SR 316 / US 29 is not proposed to change. The work along SR 316 / US 29 would be limited to tying in the entrance / exit ramps and erecting a guardrail to protect the bridge columns in the median. ROW would not change from the current 300 feet. The work would begin at MP 6.62 and continue westward to MP 7.75, a total distance of 1.13 miles. The length of SR 11 bridge of SR 316 / US 29 will be set not to preclude future widening of SR 316 / US 29. The existing two lane frontage roads from SR 11 located north of SR 316 / US 29 will be relocated north to maintain current access. Stage construction will be completed using on site detours and lane shifts with temporary paving provided at appropriate locations. Proposed structures include a bridge on SR 11 over SR 316 / US 29 which would be constructed to accommodate one through lane each direction, one turn lane each direction, and 8 foot outside paved shoulders in each direction. The bridge over SR 316 / US 29 will be designed to accommodate future widening of both SR 11 and SR 316 / US 29. Access Roads A and B proposed typical sections include two 12 foot wide lanes tapering to one 14 foot wide lane, 6 foot outside shoulders (2 foot paved, 4 foot grassed) with ROW of 24 feet (varying). The ramps in this project are proposed to include one 16 foot wide travel lane on each ramp, 8 foot inside should (4 foot paved, 4 foot grassed), 12 foot outside shoulder (10 foot paved, 2 foot grassed) with variable ROW from 60 – 100 feet from baseline. The tight urban diamond interchange is selected as the preferred type of interchange for this project.
