Abstract

The proposed project would take place on the northbound and southbound entrance ramps to 1-285 from SR 8/US 278 in the City of Atlanta in Fulton County (Figures 1-3). The existing typical section of each entrance ramp consists of approximately 16 to 24-foot concrete travel lanes. The northbound ramp consists of an urban outside shoulder with closed drainage system and a rural inside shoulder draining to the grassed gore area. The southbound ramp consists of urban outside shoulder with intermittent curb openings to flumes draining to an open ditch and a rural inside shoulder draining to the grassed gore area. The existing ROW varies between 50 and 90 feet from the centerline of the northbound ramp/roadway and between 65 and 150 feet from the centerline of the southbound ramp/roadway. Both ramps are constrained by 1-285 along the inside ramp shoulders.

The project proposes to widen the northbound entrance ramp beginning at approximately station 10+35 and ending at approximately station 25+58. The southbound entrance ramp is proposed to be widened beginning at approximately station 50+38 and ending at approximately station 65+42. The northbound typical section is proposed to consist of two 12-foot travel lanes in one direction with a 12-foot urban outside shoulder with closed drainage and a 6-foot rural inside shoulder (4 foot paved) draining to the grassed gore area/ditch. The southbound typical section is proposed to consist of two 12-foot travel lanes in one direction with a 12-foot rural outside shoulder (10 foot paved) with open ditch and a 6-foot rural inside shoulder (4 foot paved) draining to the grassed gore area/ditch. Dual lane ramp meters will be installed at the existing single lane ramp meter locations.
