Abstract

SR 40 is a major east-west corridor in southeast Georgia, connecting Folkston on the west with Kingsland, Interstate 95, and St. Marys on the east. SR 40 is designated as a hurricane evacuation route and has been identified for widening as part of the GRIP.

Along P.I. No. 0000820, SR 40 section to be widened is a rural two-lane section. Except for a .59-mile section of roadway near Browntown Road, the existing two-lane, rural section would be widened to a four-lane divided highway with a 32-foot depressed median. The .59 mile-section in the vicinity of Browntown Road would be widened to a rural five-lane typical section with shoulders, a portion of which would contain curb and gutter and five-foot sidewalks on both sides. Travel lanes would vary between 11 to 12 feet. The roadway would contain 10-foot outside shoulders (6.5 feet paved) and 6-foot inside shoulders (2 feet paved). The existing 100-foot ROW would be widened to a variable width from 194 feet minimum to 234 feet maximum. The preferred alternative would follow the existing SR 40 travel corridor, and incorporate the existing SR 40 travel lanes into the concept design as the two-eastward travel lanes of the proposed project. This use of existing corridor allows for the reduction of required ROW. This project would tie into the proposed P.l No. 0008666 project at Colerain Road in Camden County.

                At this time, the APE has been extended to existing pavement overlays and new pavement tie-ins, including repaving along Browntown Road up to the limits of construction along SR 40. Pavement would be resurfaced over the existing roadway. Some cut is anticipated along both sides of Browntown Road. At Forestry Road (Station number 825+59.34), driveway entrances would be constructed both north and south of SR 40 to connect to forestry areas. Two paved driveways would be installed. No ground disturbing activity is anticipated outside the cut lines.
