New South Associates conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey of an approximately 2,134.4- foot section of sewer line located just outside the boundaries of Fort Gordon, Augusta, Georgia. The objectives of the survey were to identify all archaeological resources within the project area, make recommendations regarding their eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and assess potential effects on these resources from construction of the sewer line.
This report details the findings of the Phase I survey. As a result of this survey, no archaeological resources were identified. Although the project was scoped as an archaeological survey, a historic railroad spur was noted on the eastern end of the proposed sewer line. This and associated resources were examined and evaluated by architectural historians as a historic mining landscape and is recommended as not eligible for the NRHP.
