Abstract

A preliminary archaeological survey has been conducted for the above project in Monroe County, Georgia. The survey was reconnaissance in nature, and as such its primary purpose was to identify all areas within the project corridor of high site probability which will require intensive surface and sub-surface inspection when the final alternate is selected. The reconnaissance survey differs from the intensive survey in both scope and purpose, with each requiring different field methodologies.

In September, 1979, Alternate “A” of the project, which consists of upgrading the existing interchanges along I-75 in Forsyth, was surveyed. No archaeological sites on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) were located along this alternate.

Alternate “B” is the proposed by-pass of Forsyth, Georgia. Beginning approximately 120 feet north of English Road in Monroe County the project extends on new location to some 150 feet north of the intersection of I-75 and Bunn Road. The entire project centerline was walked by the field archaeologist. The project will impact several floodplain areas of Town and Chambliss Creeks. Even though no surface remains were located here during the course of the reconnaissance survey, these are areas of high site probability which may contain buried cultural deposits.
