Abstract

An Archaeological survey was conducted along the corridors of the proposed Zebulon Bypass, GDOT Project Number FR-006-4(23), in Pike County. The bypass, beginning near McKinley Road on Us 19/S.R 3, travels 3.8 miles to the east and south on new location to US 19/SR 3 near Huckaby Road south of Zebulon. The proposed roadway, will b a 4-lane divided highway with a grassed 44 ft. median and a 250ft. right-of-way.

The archaeological survey was conducted by walking the entire route. All surface exposures were checked for evidence of prehistoric or historic cultural resources. Lands determined to be potential site areas were shovel tested (average shovel test was lft.x lft.x 1ft).

No significiant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor. It is concluded, therefore, that the Bypass project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP, provided that the project conforms to that described above.

In-Town alternate routes were also surveyed along US 19/SR 3 from Huckaby Road to just north of McKinley Road and along Griffin Street from US 19/SR 3 at Huckaby Road to just north of Mckinley Road and US 19/SR 3. Both alternate routes are proposed 5-lanes through the urban section of Zebulon.

Most of the R/W for the alternate routes is highly urbanized with disturbance to the natural landscape. There were no prehistoric sites discovered along the in-town alternates.
