Abstract

The project would widen and reconstruct SR 3/US 19 from County Road to approximately 300 feet north of CR 8/ Atwater Road in Thomaston, Georgia. The existing roadway is an urban section with two lanes (vary in width between 11.5 to 12 feet) in each direction and a two-way left-turn lane on the southern third of the project.

The selected alternative would include asymmetrical widening along SR 3/US 19, and would provide an urban four-lane divided highway with 12-foot lanes in each direction, a raised median, auxiliary turn lanes at major intersections, and five-foot sidewalks on both sides of the existing roadway. The raised median would vary in width from 4 feet to 20 feet. Reduced median sections would be utilized to accommodate turn lanes at the intersections with County Road, North Street, Jeff Davis Road/Harp Road, Echols Circle (the southern intersection), Jimmerson Road, and Atwater Road. The raised median width would also be reduced between Jeff Davis Road/Harp Road and the southern Echols Circle intersection.

All existing intersections would continue to tie into SR 3/US 19 at their approximate existing locations with the exception of Delray Road. Delray Road would be realigned opposite Jimmerson Road. The Delray Road right-of-way realignment would have two 12-foot lanes with eight-foot shoulders (two foot paved and a six-foot unpaved). A signalized intersection will be created at the realigned intersection of Jimmerson Road and Delray Road. The total project length along SR 3/US 19 is approximately 2.0 miles. Construction activities would be phased to allow traffic to be maintained along the existing alignment of SR 3/US 19 during construction; no off-site detours would be utilized.
