Abstract

This survey entailed the examination of a 9,600 square foot area (.220 acre) of the Oconee National Forest at the intersection of county roads 89 and 90, east of Monticello, Georgia (Figures 1 and 2). The majority of this area is within the existing roadways and has been deeply graded. The remainder of the area, bordering the roads, has been partially disturbed by clearing and drainage ditch operations. The area is now in secondary growth. The location was examined by pedestrian survey, examining all exposed surfaces. No subsurface tests were made due to the previous disturbances, erosion, and the large per cent of the area available for surface inspection. Several historic items were noted in a disturbed state east of the road at the intersection. These items ranged from early 20th century to the present, and appear to have come from an old house site east of the road and just south of the project area. Because of the disturbed nature of these remains, no further work is recommended. It is the opinion of the GDOT Senior Staff Archaeologist that no archaeological resources on U.S. Forest Service land and on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, will be affected by construction of Project PRN-89-1(159).
