Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, Georgia DOT Project F-034-1(12) was subjected to an archaeological survey intended to locate sites either on, or that could be considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The proposed project involves widening of Ga. 31 north from I-75 to U.S. 41 in Valdosta, Georgia, a distance of approximately 5 miles. Survey methods included a walking the road shoulders within the new right-of- way, and shovel testing when warranted. A small site was located by these methods just southeast of the Valdosta Municipal Airport on the east side of the road. Additional shovel testing in the area could not locate undisturbed archaeological material below the surface. As a result of the survey there does not appear to be any significant archaeological remains along the corridor. Therefore, there should not be an adverse effect to the State's archaeological resources by road construction.
