A survey of the proposed widening of 166 and 61, Carrollton to Villa Rica, was made by the staff archaeologist. The office of the State Archaeologist has expressed concern about the project's possible impact on the Soapstone quarry located north of 166 by Lake Carroll.

On the basis of information obtained through. archaeological survey, it seems unlikely that anything of historic or prehistoric significance would be affected by the completion of this project.

Due to the preponderance of Woodstock types in the collected data, it has been concluded that the site is primarily from that period.

Enclosed is a copy of the survey report for this project. In the opinion of the staff archaeologist, the cultural resources of the State will not be affected by construction of the project.

The project was located on the Red Hill 7.5' U.S.G.S. topographic map. The site files at Georgia State University and the University of Georgia showed no archaeological sites in the vicinity of the project.

Field examination disclosed that the portion from S.R. 41 south into Marietta was in a heavily developed area. The portion from U.S. 41 to the interchange with 1-75 was under thick pine cover. The most likely site type for a ridge area in this portion of Georgia is the lithic station.

Artifactual evidence from this site is meager indeed.. The surface collection included a piece of worked light grey chert and two quartz flakes. A single quartz flake was found in 4S, OE. No conclusions about time period, site type, etc. can really be formed on.

1-75-2(51) & (58), Fulton-Clayton Counties - This project would involve widening of Interstate 75 from 1-285 north to Cleveland Avenue from 4 to 8 lanes, with the construction of an interchange at Central Avenue. Some extra right-of-way will be purchased.

Location: The proposed project involves widening of 1-20 from 1-285 east of Atlanta to S.R. 138 at Conyers. Lanes would be increased from four to six. All the widening, bridge improvements, and safety barriers will be within existing right-of-way.

This plan provides for the redesign and/or widening of I-75 and 1-85 from 14th Street on the south to Northside -Drive along I-75 on the north and from Brookwood Interchange (south) along 1-85 to North Druid Hills (north).
